Welcome to the City of Grayling
The City of Grayling contracts with
Waste Management for trash services and yard waste pickup.

The contractor shall collect unlimited amounts of properly prepared and placed, bagged trash, no less than once each week on Monday, from each residential dwelling within the City.  The contractor shall not be required to collect or dispose of garbage/trash which is not placed by the roadside or which is not placed in tied 30 gallon bags or in an approved 25-35 gallon capacity covered garbage containers, not to exceed 60 pounds each.  The contractor shall also be required to collect one time per week, one per dwelling, a large household/bulky item, such as a furniture item, an appliance, Christmas tree (December to February), water heater, washer, or dryer.  A mattress and box spring count as one large item.  All other items must be boxed or bundled weighing no more than 60 pounds each with a maximum length of four feet.  Refrigerators or other appliances that contains or once contained Freon must have the Freon removed by a certified contractor, who must affix a certification sticker indicating that the Freon has been removed prior to our collection.  This is not an all-inclusive list.  Carpeting and construction material or debris will NOT be picked up.  The Contractor shall inform the City if any individual or resident, places unreasonable amounts of trash or bulky items at the curb for collection, which in the Contractor's opinion, was not generated at that residential dwelling.  The City shall contact any resident who appears to be placing trash/bulky items at the curb for collection that was not generated at the dwelling.  Additionally, the City shall take the necessary steps, which may include, passage of an ordinance to insure that all trash and/or bulky items, placed at the curb for collection are being generated at the resident's dwelling.


The Contractor shall collect unlimited amounts of properly prepared and placed yard waste, from each residential dwelling.  The Yard Waste Schedule will be the first & Third Tuesday in April, the first and third Tuesday in May, June, the third Tuesday in July, the third Tuesday August, the second and fourth Tuesday in September, the first and third Tuesday in October and the first and third Tuesday in November weather permitting.  Yard waste shall include grass, leaves, weeds, garden waste, hedge trimmings, nuts, discarded fruit, small twigs, branches less than one-inch in diameter, cut into four foot sections and securely bundled.  All yard waste must be placed at the curb in biodegradable paper bags or reusable rigid containers, 30-gallon size or smaller plainly marked "Yard Waste".  Any bag, container or bundle must not exceed 60 pounds.

General Conditions

A.  Collection Schedule - The Contractor will complete all collections for residential services on the designated day, between the hours of 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM within the City, except for the interruptions due to holidays or acts of God (weather, etc.).  All refuse and yard waste must be properly placed at the curb for collection no later than 7:00 AM on the scheduled day of collection.

B.  Interrupted Collection Schedule - No collections of refuse will be made on Sundays, New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day.  Where the holiday falls on or before the regular collection day, refuse and yard waste will be collected one day later, unless the City approves other arrangements.  Service may also be interrupted / delayed due to acts of God (weather, etc.).  The City will be notified of any service delays / interruptions caused by acts of God (weather, etc.).

C.  Yard waste may not be placed at the curb until noon of the day prior to pick-up.  (As per Ordinance No. 02-1)

D. The City of Grayling DPW will pick up brush on Thursdays; unless an emergency arises.

E.  Residential dwelling - Shall be defined as any one or two family structure that exists or is built that would be suitable for occupancy as defined by local or state codes.


The Contractor shall not be required to collect and dispose of the following items: concrete, blocks, bricks, stones, broken glass which is not contained, liquids, liquid paints, antifreeze, oil, tires, propane tanks, hazardous wastes, auto/truck/ATV/trailers/snowmobiles units/parts, etc. or any item(s) deemed dangerous to the Contractor's personnel, or equipment, such as gasoline, ashes, burning barrels or items too heavy to be lifted by an average person, or additional items mutually agreed upon by the Contractor and the City.
